"Funky Bonz"

The "Funky Bonz" are a Tucson concoction of blues, funk, and jazz. A refreshing take on a genre left on the back-burner years ago. Their electrifyin' funk bass and sax combo is almost guaranteed to leave your head bopping and your fingers swaying. 

BK, the bands lead singer says his biggest influence, "is a band, and I'm always saying this, and I don't know whether or not anyone else in the band agrees with me...but I want to strive to be the white Fishbone." Sure enough, an estimation not so far from the truth. These guys pick up on a vibe the Chili Peppers left off at in their days of funk, and to top it, they have a blues-trained guitarist (Doug "Hurricane" Floyd) to melt your face while you're rockin' your body. There's a great energy in their performance, and the chemistry is apparent.

Funky Bonz' next show is going to be in Tempe, but those guys are sure to come back to take your heart away again, sooner than later. And hopefully with new music. New bassist, "(Cancer Free) Mark Lee" is beloved among the members, and is noted for being extremely versatile between filling in and battling illness. The members hope to have him along for their next venture into material writing. 
When asked about recurring messages, or lyrical direction, BK says, "We're a bar band. We have no delusions...We dont take ourselves that seriously." Be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled folks. The Funky Bonz are here and ribbed for your pleasure.

I'm a sucker for a well done conceptual album. A certain level of musicianship is necessary to delve into a source material and create something personal on many different levels. The Supervillains have led us to Hell's gates with their ska/punk interpretation of “Dante’s Divine Comedy.” Their six song EP, Robots, is what the afterlife would sound like if you had a hell hound gnawing on thick guitar strings as you gripped your last drink for dear life. Well, that is if your dear life wasn't still back in some other level, swaying under heavy guitar and growls, with beams of a cello beckoning you into the light.

Horror rock veteran Elvis Aron Deadly and I sat down for a conversation the other night, at the Evergreen Cemetery during the last cycle of a full moon. Although Elvis didn’t turn into a rock and roll werewolf complete with a guitar made of human parts, he did go into depth about everything from the type of gear he uses, to how he keeps his hair up for days at time. If you walked past the Rialto on April 10th, you would have heard Childish Gambino bringing the roof down on a sold out crowd. You wouldn’t have heard me, but I was there and I was screaming/crying like a tween at a OneDirection concert. Jamie Verwys, my partner in rhyming and criming, held me back from jumping the stage. My stalking love for Donald Glover goes beyond his music career to his acting in Community and his writing for 30 Rock. His wit shines through in his work as Childish Gambino. He’ll make you laugh, think, and dance your ass off all in one catchy song that you’ll mumble-sing your way through each time it comes on the radio. 

Talent enjoys company. What better way to preserve this connection than music? Far more potent than the frayed friendship bracelets of our pasts, good music remains at our side for an eternity. Local band, Saint Maybe have extended their experienced hands out to us, inviting us to spend some quality time with their all-all star psychedelic rock. Once you hear, “Everything that Rises,” you will find yourself with a quality acquaintance.

The South by Southwest festival, staged in Austin Texas, has reached a level of revered infamy since its maiden show  in 1987. The event's goal to create an outlet for creative people and companies to come together and share ideas holds true today, as it has for an impressive span of years. Lucky for us Tucson “starving artist”types who can't possibly ride their bike all the way out to expansive Texas, Tucson is on the trail to Austin for many bands. Burger Records, based in Fullerton, CA, didn't stand a chance of missing us on their glory filled route to one of the most anticipated festivals in the country. Could there be a better venue for Burger Records in Tucson other than La Cocina? Burgers? Kitchen? I think not.
