Bryan Dean Trio

Written by Don R. Martin on Thursday, 30 June 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

The Bryan Dean Trio is Tucson based and consists of three uniquely talented musicians: Bryan Dean (guitar and vocals), Ralph Gilmore (drums and vocals), and KOKO (bass guitar and vocals). Bryan is the songwriter for the group. Since 2005, the band has performed hundreds of shows ranging from bars, restaurants, resort pools and featured concerts. The trio is known for their blues-based sound that can morph, at any moment, into an organic funky, jazzy frenzy. Their heavily improvised music makes every show a new experience. The trio won the Southern Arizona Blues Heritage Foundation's Blues Challenge in September of 2010. They represented SABHF to compete in the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011 and returned semi-finalists using their originals. Bryan Dean and Ralph Gilmore were inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 2010.

KaNdE sAyS: Will you be my Runner Runner?

Written by KaNdE SaYs, Stacy Fortson on Wednesday, 15 June 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Until now, I’ve wholeheartedly believed that the sole purpose of opening acts was to annoy me. I didn’t come to see the opening band, I came to see Good Charlotte and Yellowcard! Having said that, I was in absolutely no hurry to arrive at The Rialto to catch opening act Runner Runner. This Huntington Beach based band has made me do a complete 180 on “opening acts.” Truth be told, I enjoyed them far more than the “headliners.”

KaNdE sAyS: Turn Me On Mike Pinto!

I don’t like the particular brand of elitism Club Congress has to offer. I couldn’t find anyone I knew, so I did what any girl would do - made a beeline for the bar. In light of the aforementioned elitism, I felt my usual vodka cranberry may not be chic enough, so I opted for a more sophisticated Lemon Drop Martini, and my pretentiousness will bite me in the ass in 3… 2… 1…

KaNdE sAyS: Cinco de Mayo @ The Hut

Written by KaNdE SaYs on Saturday, 28 May 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Let’s get real, let’s be honest. Cinco de Mayo is a little bit hazy. Don’t judge, I KNOW I’m not alone! Rewind 3 days: I discover Pandora has a station dedicated to The B Foundation. I’ve been working at a new location for only a week, and I’ve GOT to be driving my new co-worker insane with So Cal reggae rock on 24/7. She told me she pretty much only listens to the equivalent of Sunday Night Slow Jams. Good for her, I just happen to need a little more energy in my tunes.

Voodoo Glow Skulls Fet. Three Point Turn The Hut

Written by Bean on Thursday, 26 May 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

The show only meant for a rowdy good time and drinks flying around those who look for the intensity of fun.  Tucson Rock Alliance had set new heights for those who are looking for the Ska type of flavor for the night.  The event hosted was a punk venue and the crowd was loving it.  I don't think I’ve seen a show where that many people are bumping into each other and enjoying such flavor of music at the same time.

Experience Jimi for those who didn’t…

On a Tuesday evening at the Ava Amphitheater I experienced a show unlike anything I had seen or heard before.

Two drum risers slightly facing each other, center stage set up with drums on each surrounded by an assortment of guitars to be played by some of the most amazing musicians, both young and old.

Jeff Carlson Band Interview by Courtney Ludwig

Written by Courtney Ludwig on Wednesday, 15 June 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Once upon a time four guys came together to form a band that, like many, soon disbanded only to later come together again as the Jeff Carlson Band.

Stronger, healthier and a little wiser, Jeff Carlson (Vocals), Stu Horner (Bass/vocals), Bill Horner (Guitar/vocals ) and Ando Miller (Drums), are more amazing to watch and listen to than ever before.

The Back Story

The wait for the Saturday of the show was greatly longer than appeared:
1. Back before BSceneLive’s birth, I longed to locate and explore any local hip-hop scene, coincidentally ( and currently), it came to me via a Facebook event invite.
2. With hope that I might one day i might cover a venue that's not entirely new to me. (Note: I'm 5 months into the “Live music” music age (I have drank forever) with only 6 bars under my belt. A few months ( and maybe a few drinks) and Ill ditch the newbie niche.
3.”Cinco de Drinko” produced many friends , which in turn produced a new wave of Facebook event invites and a local scene appreciation. Resulting in full to assigning myself to the show (another first).

KaNdE sAyS: VGS Q&A

on Wednesday, 01 June 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

What’s up with the weather? I went for a walk at lunch and it was warm, sunny and breezy. I's surprised to settle in at at work to find the lovely breeze has been traded in for gale-force winds, and the sunshine that kissed my shoulders swapped for a moonlight that turned me purple. My boss says, “Didn’t you check the weather before you left?” I'm almost speechless, “We live in ARIZONA, who checks weather?!” His response was, “Well, I do!” Thanks, next time we’re having Christmas in May would you text and tell me to put on some more clothes, please and thank you? My body is in survival mode. I just got my first (and only!) tattoo! My body hates me and the cold isn't helping. Trying to protect my precious ink from unwanted hugs from everyone I know (and tons I don’t know) was its own job, and doing that while preserving body heat and collecting cover was tough. Multitasking has never been my thing. Unfortunately, my senses didn’t come alive until about 11:00.

Where’s the Love Tucson?

Written by Stacy Fortson on Friday, 27 May 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Where’s the Love (Concert) was held at Club Congress on Wednesday May 11, 2011 featuring four local Tucson bands: Falling Out of Planes, A.M. Eyes, Van Gogh Rescue, and The Gallery. The event was put on by Kyle Wilson and Victor Castañeda, along with the members of the bands, and dedicated U of A students wanting to see a change in the Tucson community music scene. Victor Castañeda had this to say regarding the event:

DON’T LEAVE! COME BACK FOR MORE!

4TH Avenue was buzzing with laughter and delight on Saturday May 14th.  The University of Arizona just graduated another class and it was time to celebrate!  O’Malley’s was definitely jumping that evening.  If you didn’t make it out, you were probably too hung over from the night before.
