Don’t Put Mike Pinto on the Back Burner

Written by KaNdE SaYs on Friday, 23 September 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

The last time I saw Mike Pinto, I managed to stick my pretentiously pedicured foot in my proverbial mouth. I’ll own it: the Storyteller can call me Miss Lemon Drop any time he likes. Mike Pinto will once again grace Tucson with an amazing musical adventure, this time at the reggae-friendly venue The Hut. I’ve already let my boss know that I flat out refuse to work October 20, and I trained a replacement. I can’t wait for Mike to Turn You (and me!)On!

Trevor Hall is a Musical Genius

on Thursday, 08 September 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

His lyrics hit a chord within the soul that sends both a sweet nostalgic feeling, and one of new beginnings. Hall’s songs cross the spectrum in subject matter from politics, to love, folklore and legend, to the plights of humanity and the essential meaning of what it is to live. His style effortlessly blends reggae, rock and alternative into acoustic melodies that engage the audience instead of overwhelm them.

“Music is Power.” –Engel Indo

Written by D. L. Federico on Monday, 29 August 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

No words ever spoken are more true. Especially for the diverse group of musicians in A Son y Sol.

Passion is what gets into you, it infects and blooms within your spirit, causing a flood of emotion inside you. This is what I believe Latin music does to most people. To those sitting and listening, we can’t help but bob our foot to the beat. Different than rock or metal, Latin is as passion-driven as blues. It lives inside the rhythm, the heartbeat of the bass, or in this case in Engel Indo’s cajón.

SAVE THE LEG!!! Stacy Fortson

Written by D. L. Federico on Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Stacy Fortson broke her leg. This wouldn’t be a huge issue or deal except for how it happened and where. On a summer night in Tucson photographing a show for Bscenelive Magazine like she has hundred of times before, she broke her leg in three places. Since then she’s endured surgeries, hospital bills, physical therapy and intense pain.

KaNdE sAyS: Troy's Bucket - Making Me Famous (1 T-Shirt at a Time)

Written by KaNdE SaYs on Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

I vividly recall the first time I asked my neighbor, Sam Ann, what ska was. We were sitting at the bus stop, waiting to be chaperoned to first period of 8th grade. She (not so subtly) rolled her eyes at me, sighed and said, “You may as well just have asked me what rap is! Ska is a feeling, you can’t explain it.”  I felt stupid, but when we got home, she submerged me with Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish (still my fave!). And so begins a love affair to last a lifetime, fueled primarily though local heroes Troy’s Bucket!

GSol: Mythic Images Tour

on Tuesday, 20 September 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

It was a Tuesday night on 4th Avenue in late May when Miguel Bazemore, master percussionist, was feeling depressed, walking the streets with his lady in search of live music that would capture his attention, maybe call him to get his drums out of his car and join in.  Miguel began his international career with the Moody Blues in 1979 and was passed around as "the guy" to play congas, bongos, and timbales with such notables as Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan.

Widow’s Hill

on Monday, 05 September 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

If you ask the members of Tucson-based Widow’s Hill to describe their music, they’ll respond with one word: “hillbilly. ” But if you listen to the band—consisting of Ruth Madorma Spies (rhythm guitar/vocals), Brian Heairld (bass/vocals), Bill “Patch” Woolridge (lead guitar), and Jesse Pallente (shaker/percussion)—you’ll hear strands of vintage country, bluegrass, folk, rockabilly, and Americana, with some modern country and outlaw country thrown in for good measure. They play the sort of music you would have danced to in the 1940s and 1950s.

Here was the night everyone in Tucson had been waiting for.  eeks of anticipation were finally over and many had come to celebrate an important event for Tucson Rock Alliance. August 6th 2011 was Tucson Rock Alliance and BsceneLive’s day for celebrating the publication of their magazine, and The Rock was a perfect place for this event. The Rock has been in Tucson for many years hosting events almost every night and this event was a perfect opportunity for the Rock to let the Bscenelive magazine launch party help make history for TRA Productions, Bscenelive, and Tucson citizens.

Riley's Irish Tavern Get's Wiser, But Never Older

Written by Trevor Osborne on Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

Walking into Riley's at 5140 N La Cholla Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85705, one may notice a different kind of feeling.  It's not a place where men in tuxedo's toast with wine glasses and discuss bonds and stocks.  No, it's where people who, after a long day of work, come, sit down, drink, laugh, and are encouraged to be loud and brash.  Whether a regular or a newbie, someone will talk to you, making you feel either at home or very uncomfortable, sometimes both at once.

Put some steel in it!

The first thing you notice about Kraiger Caesar is his amazing long red beard, then all those tattoos and piercings, then he starts to speak and you notice something else: This is possibly the most laid back, down to earth guy you will ever meet. I had the good luck to meet Kraiger about 15 years ago when he was working at The Tattoo Shop.

Full Moon Festival at Peoples Imports

on Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Posted in Tucson Music Scene

One never knows the spontaneity that can be inspired by a full moon. On the night of July 15th, I took the opportunity to experience something unconventional under the gravity of the Tucson moon.
